Part 2 - The Wisdom of Green

Green is one of the world's favourite colours. We know, as discovered through the years of research under taken when colour healing, green lowers blood pressure and heart rate, reduces stress and anxiety, and uplifts mood and outlook.

And green is by no mistake Mother Earth's most favourite colour, and with very good reason. The intelligence behind all life secured and created an array of green colour hues for specific reasons, and I, in my humble way, will share my thoughts and opinions on the whys and wherefores. Green covers most of Mother Earth; at last count, it is estimated that green plants, trees, grasses, and vegetation cover almost 84% of Mother Earth's surface. In spiritual circles and for eons of time, we have spoken about...... there are no coincidences, and in this case, that is a surety.

Green, in my world of colour therapy and colour psychology is the mmmmmm colour, the deep out breath colour of ahhhhhhh, the letting go colour.

It is to green we go to escape the stresses and trials of life. The green of nature is our sanctuary colour, our nurturing colour, the colour that above all else allows rest of mind and body. Relaxation comes naturally when we are lying or sitting on green in nature, when we are surrounded by the multitude of green hues of nature, we are blessed in green.

The awe inspiring green of nature brings to mankind a whole new vista of being, when we lay on Mother earths greenery we feel connected and always grounded, we feel something different is happening internally as our breath slows and our muscles relax. Research in Japan has found the elderley increase their life span by walking or sitting in the green of nature.

But there is more, far more to the greens of Mother Earth, more than the essentials of supplying oxygen and goodness into the atmosphere for our benefit and all living things' benefit coupled with essential photosynthesis. As we engage with the green of nature, our feelings attach memories to the experience, so we build memories of the world around us and place meanings to the colour. Our subconscious notes the memories and builds our internal colour preferences, strengthening our preferences. It is a two-way process; green allows relaxation, de-stressing, and positive downtime while building subconsciously a picture and knowing that the colour green is good for our physical, mental health and on a deeper soul level. Hence we return again and again to the green of nature thus building on the colour association and memory, knowing the colour green is good for us and good memories are associated with the colour green.

We are building a memory bank around green that we use to view the world. Our memories and feelings are coloured. For those who sadly cannot get outside for whatever reason, usually bring nature indoors or find they spend much time sitting by the window looking out. It is suggested by much research to bring green plants indoors in these circumstances to alleviate the separateness or disconnect that may be felt.

It was William Shakespeare's usage of connecting green to jealousy in his plays that helped imprint this idea into our language. No one knows where this started, my thoughts are it may have began from that awful insidious limey yukey brownish greenish colour of no name that always manages to turn my stomach whenever I see it and because the effect is harsher than any other colour in the spectrum was it worn or used by someone who did suffer a jealous personality type and therefore the feeling and memory has held over time?. I will add, interestingly, when I have used colour to help heal and to support clients over the years, whenever and in the majority of cases, when ever jealous tendencies were disclosed in confidence, I observed them choose green as their number one favourite colour in a healing setting.

There is also the possibility of the green paint containing arsenic of past stamped another negative memory onto green in some peoples minds. In the 1770's a chemist by the name of Scheele found as he worked and purely by accident while experimenting with arsenic produced a bright lovely green colour, so pleased was he, it was patented in his name and sold well, with manufacturers of paint and paper thrilled with its popularity. Sadly toddlers chewing the sides of their wooden cots painted in same green either died from arsenic poisoning or became very ill. Hence the term - green is unlucky.

Today we are wiser and more informed, we leave the negative history behind and joyfully welcome in the knowledge that the greens of nature are so very good for us, our health, our nutrition, our mental health and brings joy to our higher selves and to our souls. Mother earth knew all along, it has just taken mankind thousands of years to catch up.
